For the second year in a row, leading recycling company Viridor has worked in partnership with the largest producer of soft-drinks in Europe, Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd (CCE), to raise awareness about sustainability and responsible waste management among employees across the UK.
CCE’s ‘Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (CRS) in Action Week’ is an initiative to encourage employees to take part in the different programmes and initiatives the company is running to improve its environmental performance, and to inspire them to make sustainability a way of life at work and home.
The week kicked off on Monday 11 October when managers and supervisors from the Sidcup plant saw first-hand how magnets, optical sorters and other advanced technologies sort out paper, plastic and glass bottles, aluminium and steel cans and cardboard packaging from households and business in London and south east England at Viridor’s largest Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Crayford, Kent.
Throughout the rest of the week, Viridor’s team took the recycling message to the heart of CCE’s operations when a roadshow toured the company’s manufacturing sites in North London, Milton Keynes, Kent, Bristoll, Wakefield and Scotland and the call centre in Peterborough.
While on site, the Viridor team were on hand to show employees the wide range of materials that can be recycled and encourage them to continue using the recycling facilities on site effectively.
James Maciver, CCE’s buildings and facilities manager, said: “The response we received from employees about the Viridor roadshow during our CRS in Action Week last year was extremely positive so we wanted to bring the Viridor team back to raise awareness and explain what happens to materials we separate for recycling. We have ambitious recycling and recovery targets, including a zero waste to landfill by 2012. We’re already making very good progress by recycling or recovering nearly 99 per cent of waste at our sites across Great Britain. Encouraging positive behavioural change is crucial to meeting our targets and the involvement of partners like Viridor in our annual CRS in Action week is a great way of engaging and inspiring our people to continue in their commitment to recycling.”
Victor Perez-Mares, communications manager for Viridor, said: “As CCE’s partner for recycling and waste management services, we were delighted to take part in this initiative again. CCE is setting an example of how to maximise landfill diversion and we’re proud to be part its achievements”.
Viridor, one of the UK’s leading recycling, renewable energy and waste management companies in the UK and part of the FTSE-250 Pennon Group, was appointed preferred partner for the provision of recycling and recovery services by CCE in 2009.
