Contractors have moved onto the Firepool site in Taunton to begin construction of Viridor’s new headquarters.
Viridor was the first company to announce it will be moving into the new development, which will also include other offices, a hotel and apartments.
The company has been based at its current headquarters at Great Western House since 1981. It originally shared the building with several other businesses, but as Viridor grew it gradually took over the whole building.
Talking about the move, Chief Executive Colin Drummond said: “We are extremely proud of our Taunton heritage, having been headquartered in the county town for over 50 years. This is a great place to do business, as our growth over the past decades shows.
“Viridor now operates right across the UK with over 3,000 staff at sites from Cornwall to Perthshire. Moving to new head office accommodation is an important step in meeting the future needs of the business, as we continue to expand the essential recycling and waste services we deliver for our public and private sector customers.
Elaine Page, Viridor’s HR Admin Manager, said: “We’re very much looking forward to moving into the Firepool development. It will be a great place for our people to work.
“Although our staff have a great affection for Great Western House, employees will benefit from improved facilities and a more modern working environment in a new, purpose built office.”
Rupert Joseland from St. Modwen, Taunton Deane Borough Council’s development partner for the Firepool scheme, commented: “We are delighted to welcome our partners and Viridor to Firepool as we mark one of our most visible milestones with the start of work on our first commercial building.
“Securing a major national business like Viridor is great news for Taunton.”
Viridor plans to move its 100 head office staff over to the new Firepool development in summer 2012.
