Training department meet corporate target with four months to spare

November 22, 2011

Viridor’s northern region has continued its roll out of the Investors in People (IiP) accreditation, with a further three new awards achieved. Viridor Polymer Recycling in Skelmersdale, Viridor Glass Recycling at Salmon Pastures in Sheffield and Viridor’s northern landfill sites have all been awarded IiP status.

One of Viridor’s corporate targets for 2011/12 as noted within the Corporate Responsibility Report 2011, was to roll-out the Investors-in-People registration in the Northern Region to cover three additional locations by 31 st March 2012. This relates to the Pennon Group’s CR objective to “develop and motivate our employees, to treat them fairly and ensure that they are fully engaged in all aspects of the group’s objectives”.

Only four sites in the northern region are yet to achieve the accreditation, with no sites as yet failing to meet the required standard. The next site to begin the application process will commence in January 2012.

Launched in 1991, Investors in People is a business improvement tool administered by the UK Comission for Employment and Skills and is supported by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS. IiP  is the UK’s leading people management standard, covering almost seven million employees across 35,000 organisations . It comprises 10 standards, which focus on strategic planning and management systems, implementation of corporate aims and objectives, and evaluation of performance.

Chris Whittle, Head of Training and Development commented; “I’d like to thank all staff involved in achieving this accreditation at these further sites. Investors in People is an important accreditation which reflects Viridor’s position as a leading UK employer. The northern region has undergone significant change in recent years and to achieve this status at so many of our sites during this period is a testament to all of the people involved. We now look forward to reaching our target of having achieved the accreditation at all sites across the region.”

Viridor Waste (Greater Manchester) Limited (VWGM) retained the IiP accreditation in October 2009, following its acquisition in April of the same year. At the time, Operations Director Mark Burrows Smith, committed to rolling out the programme across the Northern region.  Viridor’s Trafford Park facility has since achieved the accreditation in May of this year (2011).
