In November Shailesh Vara, Member of Parliament for North West Cambridgeshire, visited the Viridor Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) in Fengate, Peterborough to see how Viridor transforms non-recyclable black-bag waste into enough renewable energy to power 15% of the City. The visit completed a successful month for the innovative Peterborough City Council project after driving the planning and delivery of the ERF the Council and Facility secured a runner-up spot at the recent Public Sector Sustainability awards in London.
Operational at the start of 2016 the cutting-edge facility safely recovers energy from non-recyclable waste. As part of the 30 strong operations team at the ERF Viridor is now looking for local apprentices to study at the Facility in a range industry-leading schemes covering electrical, mechanical, and controls & instrumentation disciplines. Programmes last two years, achieve nationally recognised qualifications and have strong progression opportunities. Shailesh Vara, Member of Parliament for North West Cambridgeshire added: “The scale of the energy recovery plant at Fengate is a real feat of engineering and that Peterborough was chosen for this state-of-the-art facility is testament to its aspirations to become the UK’s Environment Capital. The plant has much potential and it will positively impact on Peterborough’s environment over the next three decades.”
Andrew Turner, Communications Business Partner for Viridor said of the visit: “We were delighted to show Shailesh Vara around the Peterborough ERF. Many of Shailesh’s constituents send their non-recyclable waste to the Energy Recovery Facility so it was vitally important to for him to see what happens to that waste. We were able to discuss how anything left after the energy recovery process can be recycled into building aggregates along with the metals. Viridor is also offering opportunities for local apprentices at the cutting-edge facility to help keep the lights on in the City and I would encourage anyone interest to contact Viridor to find out more.”
