Viridor and HOST 2 Ltd have agreed a total waste management contract for two campuses - Hinkley Campus accommodating 510 and Sedgemoor Campus which will be opening soon will accommodate 986 contractors for the Hinkley Point C project in Somerset.

Viridor and HOST 2 Ltd have agreed a total waste management contract for two campuses –  Hinkley Campus accommodating 510 and Sedgemoor Campus which will be opening soon will accommodate 986 contractors for the Hinkley Point C project in Somerset.

The project will see two new nuclear reactors built in the first in a new generation of power stations.

Viridor Hinkley Point C Contract Manager Louise Skinner said the 12-month contract with HOST 2 Ltd was the first of many to be agreed between Viridor and other Tier 1 Contractors for the Hinkley project.

Louise said: “This contract will see Viridor deliver a zero to landfill waste management plan. HOST 2 Ltd emphasised its desire for the contract to reflect the values of the Waste Hierarchy – reduce, reuse and recycle  –  with a keen interest in maximising all recycling opportunities which is something Viridor is well placed to do.

“HOST 2 Ltd team members will be visiting Viridor facilities to better understand our commitment to treating waste as a resource, rather than rubbish.”

The two campus sites will provide a total of 1,496-bedroom and en-suite shower facilities. The combined accommodation makes it one of the largest in Europe. Additional amenities include catering, games and entertainment areas, restaurants and bars, TV rooms and gyms.

Recyclable materials will be sent to Viridor’s Priorswood Materials Recycling Facility with glass destined for the company’s Sheffield Glass plant, food directed to the Walpole Anaerobic Digestion site and residual waste (that which cannot be recycled) sent to Ardley or Lakeside Energy Recovery Facilities.

The waste contract covers campuses which will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week with a variety of day and night shift patterns for the workforce.

Kevin McCarthy, Chairman HOST 2 Ltd, said “We are delighted to confirm the award of the campus waste management contract to Viridor.  Viridor have an excellent reputation both locally and further afield for providing an excellent service and we are confident that they will assist us in delivering our comprehensive environment and sustainability plan objectives.”
