Viridor on the hunt for apprentice to power next generation of talent at Dunbar ERF

March 13, 2019

Dunbar

Viridor, Scotland’s leading recycling and low-carbon energy company, is looking for a new apprentice to join its team at its industry-leading energy recovery facility (ERF) in Dunbar.

The successful applicant will be based at the ERF site and will have the chance to learn the mechanical engineering trade at one of Europe’s most advanced energy recovery sites. Newly operational, the site will transform non-recyclable household waste into enough energy to continuously power 39,000 homes – the equivalent of 39 wind turbines.

Working in tandem with a team of engineers, they will also learn first-hand how to maintain the state-of-the-art mechanical systems utilised in Viridor’s world leading energy recovery facilities.

First year electrical engineering apprentice at Dunbar ERF and Lothian resident Declan Donnelly, who started training with Viridor in September last year, is due to speak to students at Preston Lodge High School, Prestonpans, on Tuesday evening (5 March), where he will share his experience of undertaking an apprenticeship and its benefits to his career.

Speaking ahead of the event, Declan said: “I’ve always been interested in finding out how stuff works and from an early age wanted to be a fully qualified electrician. The support I’ve received from Viridor has been excellent and the variation of work that I undertake on a weekly basis means that no two weeks are the same. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone with an interest in joining a trade.”

Roman Pigalov, Engineering & Maintenance Manager at Viridor’s Dunbar ERF, added: “We’re committed to working with local communities, authorities and students to help train up the next generation of talent. This is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic and technically minded student to join one of the country’s leading low-carbon energy and waste management companies and make a real difference to homes and businesses in and around the local area and contribute to Scotland’s resource and energy efficiency goals.”

The apprenticeship is open to anyone who has or expects to achieve a minimum of 5 Nat 5s (Maths, English & a Science plus two others) and applications close 30 April.
